Dan O’Neill is an experienced field biologist, award-winning documentary filmmaker, wildlife TV host, and explorer, specialising in remote and challenging environments.

Dan O'Neill is a field biologist, wildlife filmmaker, and explorer, specialising in remote and challenging environments. He has organised numerous expeditions in search of rare animals from the pristine jungles of the northern Amazon and Mayan temple ruins of the Yucatan, to the frozen peaks of Central Asia.
He has worked on scientific expeditions for more than 13 years, primarily as a mammalogist, with specialisms in expedition leading, field technical skills, and camp building and management. He has camera-trapped for large felids and other mammals across the Neotropics from Guyana to Mexico and assisted the Snow Leopard Trust in Central Asia. In June 2023, he lead an ornithological study in Cusuco, Honduras for 6 weeks capturing and ringing tropical forest birds. In 2024 was the Senior Mammal Scientist on a CONANP and OPWALL partnered expedition in the Mayan jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula, and continued his work with the Snow Leopard Trust in Mongolia, assisting with the capture and collaring of snow leopards in the South Gobi desert in collaboration with the Snow Leopard Conservation Foundation team.
Dan is an award winning self-shooting director and a graduate of the prestigious postgraduate Wildlife Filmmaking program from UWE Bristol in partnership with the BBC Natural History Unit.
With a decade of local experience, Dan is an expert in Northern Amazonian wildlife In 2021 he led a 7-person expedition to the headwaters of one of Guyana’s most remote rivers – the Rewa - in search of jaguars with his indigenous friends. Dan directed and presented ‘Last Eden: Guyana’ which documented their journey which has been distributed across European TV by Viasat Nature.
In 2021, Dan directed and presented Snow Leopards: Ghosts in the Snow - a four part docu-series for BBC Earth following his expedition with the Snow Leopard Trust into the mountains of Kyrgyzstan to track down and film the famously shy snow leopard. In 2023, Dan advocated for the series to be dubbed in Kyrgyz so local audiences can engage with the series’ conservation message.
Dan is now a regular face on BBC Earth. He presented 'Dan O'Neill Investigates' - where he explored the illegal wildlife trade & animal cruelty in the UK, and ‘After We’ve Gone, discovering how nature thrives after humans leave.Dan’s brand new 5-part series ‘Giants’ produced by Off The Fence for Curiosity Stream will premiere in May 2023. The series will circle the globe on 5 epic expeditions to find the biggest beasts to have walked the planet, unlock their evolutionary secrets, and bring their even bigger extinct ancestors back to life with the latest CGI. On transmission, ’Giants’ will be the first time in history an openly LGBT wildlife presenter will have hosted a series for a major network. Dan recently hosted Nature’s Ultimate Survivors counting down the top 20 greatest animal superpowers for Xumo Play released on Earth Day 2023, and features as the large mammal expert in Animals Like Us for LoveNature next year.
In early 2020, he travelled to the rebel-occupied red zone of western Mindanao to learn the conservation story of the most endangered raptor on the planet, the Philippine eagle. His film, ‘Queen of Birds’ which documented his journey has been viewed more than 2 million times around the world on his YouTube channel.Outside of presenting, Dan has worked creatively on a variety of other projects. In 2022, he paired up with Grammy award-winning musician Imogen Heap to co-create the music behind the groundbreaking new Audible Original podcast, Climate of Change, hosted by Oscar-winning Actress Cate Blanchett. Each track samples wildlife recordings from adventures around the world curated and produced by Dan and woven into music by Imogen. In November 2022, Imogen and Dan released a double-album called Chordata Bytes I & II in-line with COP27 with the music they created for Climate of Change.
In Spring 2022, he teamed up with Freeborne media to develop and feature in a campaign for Attitude magazine. #SeaOurFuture saw Dan and world-class drag artist Bimini talking green (and blue) issues for the magazine and brought ocean advocacy to the forefront of the community conversation, combining natural history filmmaking expertise with LGBT culture through an authentic voice.Dan is a passionate advocate for increased representation in the LGBTQI+ community in STEM, adventure, and in wildlife film careers. He is proud to share his experiences, work with brands and on campaigns in order to raise awareness of the challenges the community faces. His work has been featured in The i, Broadcast Magazine, Attitude Magazine, Gay Times, Trippin, and more.
